**Advancing Naval Careers Through Higher-Ed Outreach and Research (ANCHOR) Fellowship in Engineering**

[ANCHOR Fellowships](https://web.uri.edu/naval-science-technology/students/undergraduate-students/anchor-fellowship/) are open to U.S. citizen undergraduate engineering students in their sophomore through senior years. The Fellowship is a paid summer opportunity for students to gain experience in research labs.  
The program runs from May 26 to July 31 during summer 2026. Fellows will work 30 hours per week while receiving a stipend of $6500. On-campus housing and food are provided.

To participate in this program, students must:

Fellows will be matched with a faculty member to work on naval-related research. See the below research topics graphic for an idea of what you might research. Successful candidates must be in good academic standing and should possess a strong interest in naval sciences and research.

**CalTech Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowships**

[The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowships (SURF) program](https://sfp.caltech.edu/undergraduate-research/programs/surf) is one of the "crown jewels" of Caltech. Since 1979, SURF students have had the opportunity to conduct research under the guidance of experienced mentors working at the frontier of their fields.  
SURF is modeled on the grant-seeking process:

Students collaborate with a potential mentor to define and develop a project  
Applicants write research proposals as part of the application process  
Faculty review the proposals and recommend awards  
Students carry out the work over a 10-week period during the summer

At the conclusion of the program, students submit a technical paper and give an oral presentation at one of several SURF Seminar Days, symposia modeled on a professional technical meeting.

Fellows receive a $8,110 award.

**Memorial Sloan Kettering Mechanistic Biology Summer Program (MBSP)**

Program Overview: Memorial Sloan Kettering and the Gerstner School of Biomedical Sciences are pleased to invite applicants to the [Mechanistic Biology Summer Program.](https://www.mskcc.org/education-training/summer-scientific-undergraduate-programs/mechanistic-biology-summer-program) This program is designed for undergraduate students who wish to gain research experience exploring fundamental questions in biology and who are interested in pursuing a career in biomedical sciences. The 10-week program begins on June 1 and ends on August 7, 2026.  
Students in the program will:

**T**he National Science Foundation funds a large number of research opportunities for undergraduate students through its REU Sites program. An REU Site consists of a group of ten or so undergraduates who work in the research programs of the host institution. Each student is associated with a specific research project, where he/she works closely with the faculty and other researchers. Students are granted stipends and, in many cases, assistance with housing and travel. Undergraduate students supported with NSF funds must be citizens or permanent residents of the United States or its possessions. An REU Site may be at either a US or foreign location. The RAY Fellowship Program is a year-long paid fellowship designed to equip recent college graduates with an undergraduate degree with the tools and support systems they need to become leaders in the ocean conservation field; one that fully represents the rich and diverse communities within the United States. \*Please note, that a strong background in marine conservation is not a requirement for this program.

**The Summer Undergraduate Research Institution for the Study of Kidney Disease (SURISKD) Program**

[The Summer Undergraduate Research Institute for the Study of Kidney Disease (SURISKD) Program](https://gsbs.utsouthwestern.edu/research-opportunities/suriskd/index.html) at UT Southwestern’s Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences is an intensive summer research training experience for college students who are preparing for Ph.D. or M.D./Ph.D. careers in biomedical research with a special emphasis on kidney-related research. Participants spend 10 weeks (beginning in early June and ending mid-August) pursuing individual research projects that range from embryonic development and physiology to kidney cancer and imaging in the laboratories of Graduate School faculty members. This program is funded by an R25 grant (DK1014010) from the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK). Tom Carroll, PhD, is the Principal Investigator for the grant. The stipend for the 10-week program is $5,000.

**Yale University BioMed Amgen Scholars Program**

[The Yale BioMed Amgen Scholars Program](https://medicine.yale.edu/biomedsurf/) is a research-intensive summer training program in biomedical research for undergraduate students who plan to obtain a PhD or MD-PhD in the biomedical sciences. We particularly encourage students who are members of groups underrepresented in the sciences, who are the first in their families to college, who are from inner city or rural communities, or who have grown up with financial or other disadvantage to apply.

The aims of Yale BioMed Amgen Scholars Program are: to identify applicants interested in biomedical research careers; to provide them with an intensive research and didactic experience in biomedicine during a 9-week residency at Yale School of Medicine; and to provide faculty and peer mentoring resources that extend throughout and beyond the program.

The goals of this program are to recruit students from diverse backgrounds and experiences to careers in biomedical research and to provide them with knowledge, skills and resources to help them succeed as scientists or physician-scientists. We expect participants of this program to successfully apply to and complete graduate training programs (PhD or MD-PhD) in biomedical sciences, and to pursue careers in research and/or teaching after graduation. We anticipate that Yale BioMed Amgen Scholars Program students will become highly competitive applicants to graduate training programs at Yale University and other premier institutions.

**The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF)-Stem Cell Program**

The Hamon Center for Regenerative Science and Medicine (CRSM), directed by Dr. Eric Olson, announces the establishment of a new [Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship program called SURF-Stem Cell](https://gsbs.utsouthwestern.edu/research-opportunities/surf/surf-stem-cell.html). CRSM’s mission at UT Southwestern is to decipher fundamental mechanisms and developmental principals of tissue formation, and to pioneer new approaches to rejuvenate and regenerate damaged organs, and most importantly, to educate students about regenerative science and medicine.The stipend for the 10-week program is $5,000.

[Environmental Health Summer Fellowships at The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)](https://www.neha.org/nephip)

This is a paid 10-week summer environmental internship for undergraduate students who are passionate about the environment, interested in human health, and curious about how they are linked.

Interns will be placed in environmental health programs at the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) National Center for Environmental Health and the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (NCEH/ATSDR) at CDC in Atlanta, GA (please note, the CDC has multiple locations in Atlanta and CLEH interns will be reporting to CDC’s Chamblee Campus and not CDC’s Roybal campus (the main CDC campus)). Over the course of the summer, interns will be exposed to a broad overview of environmental public health issues at the federal level.

**Summer Public Health Scholars Program (SPHSP)**  
[The Summer Public Health Scholars Program (SPHSP) ](https://www.publichealth.columbia.edu/academics/special-programs/pathway-programs/summer-public-health-scholars-program)is designed for undergraduate students and its goal is to increase interest in and knowledge of public health and biomedical science careers. SPHSP is a partnership of the Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons, College of Dental Medicine, School of Nursing, and the Mailman School of Public Health. Together, they represent the broad spectrum of public health practice. SPHSP was awarded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Office of Minority Health, and Health Equity (OMHHE), under the CDC Undergraduate Public Health Scholars Program (CUPS).

The program is designed for undergraduates entering their junior or senior year and recent baccalaureate degree students who are undecided about their career goals. This is a rigorous program that includes Public Health coursework at Columbia University; hands-on field experience and immersion in a diverse, economically disadvantaged urban environment; seminars and lectures with public health leaders; and mentoring by faculty members, ensuring students' exposure to the breadth and importance of public health as a career option.

**Morehouse College Project IMHOTEP Program**  
[The Lewis Scholars' Imhotep Project](https://morehouse.edu/academics/programs/summer-academy/project-imhotep/) is an 11-week summer internship program designed to increase the knowledge and skills of underrepresented minority students in biostatistics, epidemiology, and occupational safety and health.

The program begins with two weeks of intense educational training in public health courses such as Public Health &amp; Health Disparities, Epidemiology, Biostatistics and Scientific Writing. The purpose of this training is to equip interns with the academic information necessary to complete the program. During the following nine weeks, interns are paired in a one-on-one mentored relationship with experts at CDC, academic institutions, local and state agencies, or community based organizations to complete a public health research project. In addition, interns participate in a variety of seminars, workshops, educational initiatives and are required to complete 16 hours of community service.

Interns will culminate their experience by giving an oral poster presentation to their peers, mentors, and public health professionals and develop a research manuscript suitable for publication in a scientific journal. Interns will receive a stipend, lodging on the campus of Morehouse College, course credit, and travel expenses to and from their city of origin.

**Maternal and Child Health Careers - Research Initiatives for Student Enhancement-Undergraduate Program (MCHC/RISE-UP)**  
[The Maternal and Child Health Careers-Research Initiatives for Student Enhancement-Undergraduate Program (MCHC/RISE-UP)](https://www.kennedykrieger.org/training/programs/center-for-excellence-in-public-health-leadership/mchc-rise-up) provides opportunities for enhanced public health leadership training in maternal and child health, focusing on social determinants of health, elimination of health disparities, and developmental disabilities. Grant funding for this program was awarded to Kennedy Krieger Institute by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) John R. Lewis Undergraduate Public Health Scholars Program to develop a national consortium of institutions and universities that provides undergraduate scholars with three public health leadership experiences: (1) clinical, (2) research, and (3) community engagement and advocacy.

[**Biomedical Engineering Summer Internship Program (BESIP)**](https://www.nibib.nih.gov/labs-at-nibib/besip) is an intensive ten-week research experience for rising seniors. Students conduct research at National Institutes of Health (NIH) laboratories in Bethesda, Maryland.  
Students interested in biomedical engineering research will come to the NIH campus from June 2, 2025 to August 8, 2025 for an intensive in-person research experience. The internship allows students to participate in cutting-edge biomedical research projects under the mentorship of world-class scientists and engineers in NIH laboratories in Bethesda, MD. BESIP interns can also participate in a variety of professional and career development programs offered by the NIH’s Office of Intramural Training and Education. The BESIP program contains two tracks: BESIP-BME and BESIP-STEM.  
BESIP-BME: Applicants must be working towards a bachelor’s degree in engineering, physical science, or computer science. Applicants should have completed at least three years of undergraduate study by summer 2025, be returning to school for at least one more semester (i.e., graduate no earlier than December 2025), and have had prior hands-on experience in biomedical engineering research. If you are ready for a more independent project, this program is for you!  
BESIP-STEM: Applicants are NOT majoring in engineering, physical science, or computer science but are interested in pursuing biomedical engineering in graduate school or as a career. This could include applicants from other science majors such as biology, biochemistry, mathematics, chemistry, and other related biomedical disciplines. Alternatively, BESIP-STEM applicants may be majoring in engineering, physical science, and computer science but have not had a previous in-person biomedical engineering research experience. Applicants must be enrolled in an accredited community college, college, or university in the United States as an undergraduate, have completed at least one year of study by summer 2025, and be returning to school for at least one more semester (i.e., graduate no earlier than December 2025.)

**Cold Spring Harbor Undergraduate Research Program (URP)**  
[The Undergraduate Research Program (URP) at CSHL](https://www.cshl.edu/education/undergraduate-research-program/) provides an opportunity for undergraduate scientists from around the world to conduct first-rate research. Students learn the scientific process, technical methods and theoretical principles, and communicate their discoveries to other scientists. Approximately 20 students come to CSHL each summer for the program, living and working in the exciting Laboratory environment.

**Marine Biology Laboratory Summer Undergraduate Research (REU) -** The Marine Biological Laboratory (MBL) invites undergraduate students who are interested in pursuing careers in the life sciences to apply to the [NSF REU Biological Discovery in Woods Hole Program.](https://www.mbl.edu/education/internships/nsf-reu-biological-discovery-woods-hole)

Faculty with expertise in molecular and cell biology, neurobiology &amp; behavior, physiology, developmental biology, and evolutionary biology will guide ten highly motivated undergraduate students in this National Science Foundation Research Experience for Undergraduates (NSFREU) program.

Each undergraduate student will be placed in the laboratory of an MBL research scientist and fully participate in all laboratory exercises and activities. The program will provide a stipend ($7,000) and room and board for the duration of the program. Students from small colleges or from underrepresented groups are especially encouraged to apply.

**NIH Summer Internship Program in Biomedical Research -** [Summer programs at the National Institutes of Health (NIH)](https://www.training.nih.gov/programs/sip) provide an opportunity to spend a summer working at the NIH side-by-side with some of the leading scientists in the world, in an environment devoted exclusively to biomedical research. The NIH consists of the 240-bed Mark O. Hatfield Clinical Research Center and more than 1200 laboratories/research projects located on the main campus in Bethesda, MD and the surrounding area as well as in Baltimore and Frederick, MD; Research Triangle Park, NC; Hamilton, MT; Framingham, MA; and Detroit, MI. NOTE: the number of positions in Hamilton, Framingham, and Detroit is limited.  
This program is for college, graduate and professional students interested in exploring careers in research and healthcare. These are full-time research positions within one of the NIH Institutes and Centers (IC) in the NIH Intramural Research Program. Research groups are located on all NIH campuses, including the main campus in Bethesda, MD.

Summer interns work in research groups directed by a Principal Investigator (PI). We offer research opportunities in the biomedical, behavioral, and social sciences with opportunities to explore basic, translational, and clinical research. Students interested in biology, engineering, epidemiology, psychology, mathematics, chemistry, pharmaceutical sciences, nursing, physics, computer science, bioinformatics, and other health-related fields are invited to apply. Summer interns may not work in administrative offices or outside of the NIH IRP.

**Amgen Scholars Program for Summer Research -**  
[The Amgen Scholars Program ](http://www.amgenscholars.com/)provides hundreds of selected undergraduate students with the opportunity to engage in a hands-on research experience at many of the world’s leading educational institutions. The Program seeks to increase learning and networking opportunities for students committed to pursuing science or engineering careers and to spark the interest and broaden the perspective of students considering scientific careers. Ultimately, the Program aims to increase the number of students pursuing advanced training and careers in the sciences.

The Amgen Corporation provides funding for the Amgen Scholars Program. These funds provide stipends plus board to qualified undergraduates to conduct research in laboratories at 10 major research universities across the United States. Research areas depend upon the host institution but include topics in biology, chemistry, engineering, medicine, bioinformatics, and statistics. Students in at all Amgen Scholars sites travel to California in July to attend a research symposium with presentations by scientists in academia and industry. This symposium also gives students the opportunity to network with Amgen Scholars at other universities with Amgen Scholars programs.

**The Department of Molecular and Integrative Physiology at the University of Michigan** offers a [summer undergraduate research program.](https://medschool.umich.edu/departments/molecular-integrative-physiology/education/undergraduate-summer-research-programs/surf-fellowship) The Department of Molecular &amp; Integrative Physiology at the U-M Medical School offers a Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) program for undergraduates interested in physiology or biomedical sciences research.

Open to students from any degree-granting institution, the program gives preference to those pursuing research careers.

**UC San Diego Scripps Institution of Oceanography, Marine Physical Laboratory -** [The Marine Physical Laboratory (MPL)](https://mpl.ucsd.edu/internships/) at world-renowned Scripps Institution of Oceanography (SIO) at the University of California San Diego (UC San Diego) seeks inquisitive, motivated undergraduates with exceptional aptitude for quantitative science to apply for the MPL Summer Internship Program.

The MPL Summer Internship program is a paid ten-week research program where students complete their own individual research project under the mentorship of some of the most notable scientists in the world. In addition to their research, students will attend weekly seminars, participate in hands-on activities, and more. Undergraduate college students majoring in oceanography, applied mathematics, engineering, physics, chemistry, biology, geology and related majors are encouraged to apply.

**Summer Undergraduate Research Fellows Program at the Scripps Research Institute -** [The Jane Teranes - Scripps Undergraduate Research Fellowship (JT-SURF)](https://scripps.ucsd.edu/undergrad/surf) is a 10-week summer Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) designed to engage students in diverse and exciting earth, ocean and atmospheric sciences research at a world-renowned institution.

In particular, the JT-SURF program seeks to increase the diversity of students successfully prepared to pursue Earth and ocean sciences career pathways, and to recruit individuals from institutions with limited undergraduate research opportunities.

Applicants of any race, ethnicity, color, religion, gender, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, national origin, age, dis/ability or veteran status are welcome. Students who are members of a group that is historically under-represented in earth and ocean sciences, including students who are Hispanic/Latine, Black or African American, Asian, Pacific Islander, Native American or Alaska Native, and LGBTQIA+ are strongly encouraged to apply. **U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) HS-STEM Summer Internships**

[The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Science and Technology Directorate Office of University Programs](https://www.dhs.gov/homeland-security-careers/health-science) sponsors a 10-week summer internship program for students majoring in homeland security related science, technology, engineering and mathematics (HS-STEM) disciplines. The program provides students with quality research experiences at federal research facilities located across the country and allows students the opportunity to establish connections with DHS professionals. It is open to undergraduate and graduate students in a broad spectrum of HS-STEM disciplines and DHS mission-relevant Research Areas.

Undergraduate students receive a $6,000 stipend plus travel expenses.

[**Summer Internship in the New England Biolabs**](https://www.neb.com/en-us/promoting-science-education/summer-internship-program)

New England Biolabs offers paid summer internships to students who want to gain real-world experience in the biotechnology industry. These internships are designed for students attending undergraduate college or entering college in the Fall of 2025. Interns work on projects in **research, application development, and production labs** and receive supervision from the NEB Scientist to whom they are assigned.

**Eligibility:**

- Students enrolled in an undergraduate college or 2025 high school graduates entering an academic program pursuing a bachelor’s degree in the Fall of 2025.
- **Interns working in a laboratory setting must be at least 18 years old.**
- Interns must be authorized to work in the United States.

**Time frame:**

- The application process for summer internships opens in mid-January and extends through the end of February 2025.
- Resume review, candidate interviews, and selection occur between February – early April.
- Interns may work between May - August 2025.

- Interns are invited to attend both an internal and external seminar series. The in-house seminar aims to provide students with an overview of NEB research and development and to help interns see how their projects fit into the big picture. - Interns present their summer work in a formal talk or at a poster session to the NEB community in August.
- Interns participate in informal discussions with NEB scientists from various backgrounds across company departments.

**Ocean Sciences Experience NSF Research Program**

NSF supports Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) Sites at hundreds of research institutions across the country and in international locations. Most of these REU Sites host groups of 10-20 students for summer internships, although some operate during the academic year. Interns receive a stipend, housing and travel expenses. The students are paired with a scientist as a mentor, conduct an independent research project and participate in various professional development workshops. Many interns receive support to present their work at a scientific conference after the internship is complete. The Division of Ocean Sciences supports about thirty REU Sites each year. Application websites for most of these OCE REU’s are open now or will open soon and most application deadlines are in mid-February or March. The deadline for the fall semester program in Bermuda is in May. Please encourage undergraduates to apply to an OCE REU Site. Applications at each site are accepted from undergraduates enrolled in a degree program (part-time or full-time) leading to a baccalaureate or associate degree. Students must be US citizens or permanent residents of the US or its territories. Applications from veterans, students with disabilities, minorities, first-generation college students and community college students are encouraged.
