Kate Penner
Kate Penner is the Undergraduate Science Research Advisor and supports Harvard College undergraduates' involvement in science research at the university. She organizes large and small events, such as the Harvard Undergraduate Research Opportunities in Science (HUROS) Fair, Science Research Spotlights, as well as workshops and individual advising meetings, which help students identify their interests, find opportunities, make contact with faculty, and start strong in these new workspaces.
In her capacity as a preceptor, she has been on the teaching teams for courses throughout the calculus sequence, including Math M, 1a, 1b, 21a, 21b, 23, and 100-level courses. Kate was a program coordinator, helping to design and run the Harvard College Emerging Scholars Program, a math department pilot designed to support STEM-interested students at the introductory calculus level, with an emphasis on populations of students underrepresented in the sciences. She also served as the STEM Academic Coach at the university's Academic Resource Center.
Her work as a practitioner -- program designer and math educator -- is focused on opening STEM disciplines and experiences to students across the college from an array of backgrounds. She graduated from the Harvard Graduate School of Education in 2021 with a master's degree in Specialized Studies, with a focus on high school to college STEM transitions.
